Chapter 11 Eh-Rin

"Who now comes against me?”

The crowds roared. This was not the intent of those present, but thinking of what Tubor had said, this was a possibility to be expected. Tubor wanted Kealin as his own.

Tubor was standing and clapping but not to the approval of the lord of Tyr, the man whose son had been mortally injured only minutes before. The lord stood and made a signal to a guard standing near the gates. Kealin noticed the guard went through the main gates and disappeared.

From the metal gateway used by all coming from the podium emerged Tubor, as well as the two remaining Rusis girls and an accompaniment of guards. Kealin walked away from them, going to Jesia, who was covered in blood but breathing.

"Kealin! Proud warrior! You would fight well for the glory of the Grand Protectorate!" Tubor began to look around, attempting to quiet the crowd. "He has fought well. How would you like such a man to fight for the glory of you and the island of Cyr? A reborn elf of old, a man against that which he came."

"I did not agree to anything of this nature."

"You want to live," Tubor replied plainly. "Life equals servitude as a gladiator of my house, to train many others to be like you and to fight for my glory."

The guard from before that was sent away by the lord of Cyr returned with a host of royal guards who swarmed the arena grounds in a large swathe. Around the edge of the stands, archers appeared with bows drawn.

"This man does not deserve life but death, as was the intent," the lord of Cyr announced. "He must die."

“He is a proud warrior of the elven race,” the Admiral boasted, “Perhaps he can understand reason and sanity when faced with death.”

"Thank you, Admiral. Great lord of Cyr, have pause. He would fight for us. He did not kill your son. That was done by the dwarf who now has no head. Let him give us his answer and we will decide."

Kealin looked down. This was not an attempt for any except to draw his target closer. Tubor wore the necklace that held his Rusis hostage. Kealin would not go as a slave to a man into a life of pointless killing. The Rusis were powerful, and at this point, he was thinking in moments only a step ahead. If he was to fall to these circumstances, it would be in forward motion toward his enemy. The gateway from which they had come was built up, making it possible for one to climb if of considerable skill. He could make it up and out of the arena, hopefully taking the Rusis with him. But he could not simply leave Jesia. He was confused by his own decisions; he did not need to let any person distract him from his task.

But so far, his plan was working. His target had fallen to a simple show of emotion, false emotion.

Tubor placed his hand on Kealin's shoulder.
